Eliza from Berlin (@Fashion Confession) is an interesting individual. She doesn't own a single pair of jeans in her closet! (how is that even possible? 🙂 ) Eliza has a solid background to be a fashion blogger, it didn’t take her too long to boost the fan base and took it as a full-time job. I felt extremely pumped after the interview with her, and I realized why we started doing this interview series. As Eliza puts it, blogging is a “long-term job”, no overnight success, but determination and constant hard working.
When did you start blogging and how did you come to the idea?
Let’s be honest, my career has been always related to the fashion business, so a fashion blog was an obvious choice of becoming a professional outlet for me.
Fashion Confession was founded in the end of 2014 as a hobby, and I started to take it seriously from February 2015, so just a little over half a year, and I have to say, I won’t stop. As I can see my circle of subscribers growing constantly, I love being able to provide content to like minded individuals who enjoy reading and watching my work.
Who is your style icon? Why?
Well, I have only one and it is Eva Green, because I think there is no other woman in the world able to compete with her. She is so real and natural, while others seem artificial soulless dolls, pitiful semblance of women.
How do you describe your personal style? What are your inspirations?
I was born and raised in an artistic family, so I was surrounded with paintings and books, and I have an incredible imagination. So fashion for me is like a theatre, where you can be anyone anytime. And I learned how to mix different styles and create different looks. As for my personal style, then everything depends on my current mood. But I like retro looks so much and I really like when the woman looks as feminine as possible – so it’s all about high heels, corsets, nice dresses and a lovely makeup! Earlier 20s and 30s give me lots of inspiration!
What are the essential pieces you must have in your closet?
Haha, you're not gonna believe – I do not have a single pair of jeans, but lots of dresses. So I would say, a nice skirt or a pair of leather leggings, mixed with a fancy t-shirt and a leather jacket (here I would go for light-grey colour) are the essential pieces of mine.
How often do you post? How do you come up with post ideas?
Normally, I post two-three times a week and I’m trying to film at least one-two videos for my YouTube Channel. But when you do all the promo, SEO, editing, shooting and so on alone, well, 24 hours is definitely not enough for this sometimes. I already have a fully-booked schedule for several months ahead and lots of events to look forward to, meaning lots of new and fresh content for my blog as well as for my YouTube Channel.
What would you describe the biggest challenge in fashion blogging?
It’s a very hard question, because it all depends. But one thing I know for sure – you have to stay unique. Like always. And it’s very important to go your own way. But sometimes it’s a little bit too hard. There are ups and downs, however, if you found your way, it will be easy day by day.
Another important thing about all of this jazz – today blogging has become more of a profession for creative people, who don’t want to be locked in the office 24/7. The main reason for this is that you have the freedom to write whenever you want, about whatever you want. Of course, it isn't as simple as just opening up Word or NotePad and writing down whatever thoughts spring into your mind. You have to deal with SMM and Google Analytics, normally on your own when you're first starting out and this alone is enough to keep you up at night if you have no previous experience. You then have to write and self edit not only your written posts, but nowadays video and photos are just as important to any budding and successful blogger as everything else. Regular content of at least two times per week minimum is a must have as well. All of this is a very hard and exhausting work mentally. But it is definitely worth it, without a doubt.
What is the greatest satisfaction of being a fashion blogger?
The greatest satisfaction for me is the possibility to see the result almost immediately. You see how people react to your work, how do they respond. And if you stay for a minute and look back on what you’ve done, you’ll see what a huge step it was and what you have achieved. Because when you do one step at a time towards your dreams and goals, believe me, they become real and turn into your daily routine, but it tastes so sweet.
A fashion rule you never break?
Wear animal prints or mix them with pink.
What do you splurge on?
Books and paintings. And dresses ?
From your point of view, what is the notable trend for the upcoming season?
Unfortunately, it seems we’re going back to the tasteless 90s at the moment with all those leopard prints and huge neon plastic jewellery. But since fashion is cyclical, after all this riot of colour and different textures blow over, I’m really looking for the pastel colours or at least black-n-white and the eternal classic of minimalism.
Do you make money from your blog? Any advice for others?
Yes, I do. But I had to work for my Blog first, work very hard and invest a lot of money, time and effort into it. The only one piece of advice I’d surely like to give to those of you, who just started this long way – never give up! At first it will be super hard, and you will be really bad at whatever you try. But don't worry if you try for a few days or months. I was you two years ago, frightened and alone. The decision not to giving up and to moving forward is a very hard one for many reasons. The time it has taken and the learning curve are two big “yes” for blogging. But the only thing I regret a lot – that I didn’t start doing it earlier. This is sometimes you just have to go ahead and take things as they come, one step at a time. And looking back at this very hard, sometimes very frustrating, but amazing experience, I can say with confidence that it was worth it. With no doubts! And if you’re still not sure about this, just remember one simple thing – success comes to those who work hard and never give up. And when you feel like quitting, think about why you started. So go for it and never look back!
What has been your most successful blog post till now and what was it about?
I would say, that each new article is generally always more successful than the previous one, because the more you do and the more effort you put into it, the more you learn and sharpen your skills.
How do you see your blog in 5 years?
Successful. Because when you do what you really love and what you're truly passionate about, you'll never work a day in your life, remember? And I'm so happy to do what I really enjoy doing. I could not imagine my life without it anymore.
Is there anything that you want to share with us which was not included in the list?
Blogging for me is a sort of challenge, where I can conquer myself and check myself for strength. I think it’s very good, because when you’re dealing with it every day, you’re learning new tools, you're doing everything possible and sometimes the seemingly impossible, by yourself. And your tomorrow only depends on you. I believe, it is super motivating and so exciting, because you're building, bit by bit, your own future success. And even if I feel myself a little bit stuck or stumbling, I always remember one of my favorite and the most motivational quotes – IF YOU GIVE UP NOW, WHAT WAS THE POINT OF EVERYTHING?
Designer – Sruli Recht, Yohji Yamamoto
Fashion Brand – Acne Studios, Hermes
Colour – Black and Navy Blue
Quote – IF YOU GIVE UP NOW, WHAT WAS THE POINT OF EVERYTHING?
Way to relax – Escape to the woods or Nordic sea?
